Student/classroom activities that complement the study of CPW4U. They focus on the Canadian and American electoral systems, Canadian anti-terrorism legislation, and Senate and electoral reform. The activities can also be used to update and extend Emond Montgomery’s Trillium-listed Canadian and World Politics.
The classroom activity on the Canadian and American electoral systems includes a classroom debate on the strengths and weaknesses of the respective systems, websites for researching the systems, a rubric for assessing student debate performance, and a debate tracking sheet.
The materials on anti-terrorism legislation include a classroom debate (involving student teams, Internet research, and oral presentation), a backgrounder on Canada’s use of security certificates under immigration legislation, and a case (with solutions) on R v. Charkaoui, a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision that considered the government’s use of security certificates in combatting terrorism.
The materials on Senate and electoral reform include a student activity involving research and classroom discussion of options for reforming the Senate, and a case (with solutions) on R v. Bryan, a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision that considered the constitutionality of federal election night blackout legislation.
The materials are drawn from Emond Montgomery’s Class Action newsletter.
