With the new year come new classroom resources:

  • From Jan Haskings-Winner, two activities for Canadian History (Ontario, Grade 10, CDC2D and CHC2P), focusing on the 1920s. One is an organizer using a Think Literacy strategy, and one is a video guide for use with CBC's People's History video #12. Both activities complement Emond Montgomery's Canadian Sources: Investigated.
  • From Alison Harrington McCabe, a reflective writing activity for The Fashion Industry (Ontario, Grade 12, HNB4O) using an article from Maclean's magazine. Students reflect on what/who creates fashion, what fashion reflects about our society and values, and what our clothing choices communicate about us on a personal level. The activity includes a rubric for assessing individual performance.
  • From Alison Harrington McCabe, a group activity for Issues in Human Growth and Development (Ontario, Grade 12, HHG4M). Students research a learning theorist whose work applies to human learning and then demonstrate a thorough understanding of that theory/theorist in a game show oral presentation format. The activity includes a rubric for assessing individual performance.
  • From John Myers, a Reaction Wheel — a quick way to find out what students are thinking about a particular issue or what background knowledge they might have about a topic to be explored in your curriculum. The Reaction Wheel can also be used as a pre- and post-test to see changes in students' attitudes or perspectives on a issue as a result of their learning. Thus it is a tool for both formative (diagnostic) and summative assessment.

We hope you and your students find these resources useful and interesting. Please let us know!
