1. Encouraging Participation

a. Introduction to course

Introduce course, marking scheme, expectations for attendance, punctuality. Stress following instructions and participating.

b. Parts of participation

Discover the components of participation by first creating a mind map, and then reviewing the participation rubric. Rubric will be used for teacher and self-evaluation whenever we do activities.

c. Gym routines

Go through the usual gym routine (warm-up, short run, stretch, long run, strength).

Several low organization games done inside and outside (e.g., dumping ground, murder ball, British bulldog, etc.).

2. Values and Responsibility

a. Who am I?

Complete a worksheet to help understand what they think about themselves. Then choose five statements on the worksheet that were not "most of the time," and in sentences explain why not.

b. What do I value?

On a worksheet with values statements (about courage, fairness, freedom, honesty, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, cooperation, fair play) write whether or not they value the behaviour. After completing the worksheet it should be clear that they do value these things.

c. Values case study

Read a short case study involving values and answer questions.

d. Taking responsibility

Complete a mind map of how to take responsibility for your actions, and answer questions on how this connects to gym activities.

3. Groups and Teams

a. Building healthy relationships

Complete a self-inventory about building healthy relationships, and then respond to questions based on the score

Self-inventory worksheets will be completed throughout the course and assessed regularly. Keep them in a portfolio that will be used at the end of the course for a final assessment project.

b. What is group work?

Make a list of good group work skills (following instructions, taking turns, encouraging others, participate in making decisions, fair share of work), and discuss. Also discuss methods of reaching group agreement (consensus, majority rules).

c. Group building exercise

Do several group-building exercises in groups of 3 to 5 students.

d. Team-building game

Play tug of war. Play capture the flag outside on the field, using a defined territory and rules that students help define.
