1. Substance Use and Abuse

a. What are substances and substance abuse?

Using a brainstorm map, students (alone or in pairs) complete a list of types of legal and illegal substances, including as many names for them as possible. Define stimulants, depressants, narcotics and inhalants, and classify brainstorm.

Give a substance abuse pre-test with True and False questions, and asking for student impressions for why people use drugs, tobacco, and alcohol.

Note on dangers of substance abuse, why people begin using substances, and how this affects health. Stress that using substances is always a choice, and the job of this course is to give you the reasons for why it is a bad choice for your health and future.

Complete a self-inventory on substance use, and then respond to questions based on the score.

b. Tobacco

Complete a self-inventory on tobacco use, and then respond to questions based on the score.

Review a sheet of Tobacco Facts.

Take notes on benefits of being a non-smoker, and effects of smoking on the body (respiratory, circulatory systems, cancers and pregnancy). Discuss active ingredients in tobacco (nicotine and its effects) as well as toxins (added and already present) . Discuss other forms of tobacco use and their effects.

Find two pieces of tobacco advertising, and alter the image and/or text of the advertisement to persuade people to not want to use the product. Write several sentences explaining what negative aspect of tobacco use each modification is designed to show.

Review a sheet of alcohol facts and myths.

Take notes on why young people drink, the effects of alcohol on the body, drinking and driving, and fetal alcohol syndrome

Show Working it out: A family discusses drinking.

Discuss two perspectives on consuming alcohol: binge versus responsible/moderated drinking. On a worksheet and through class discussion students develop reasons for why choosing to drink at 14yrs in this community is not a good choice.

Take notes on alcoholism (the alcoholic, signs of alcohol abuse, stages of alcoholism, effects on the family and community).

Complete a brainstorm map (alone or in pairs) on the forms and types of solvents and inhalants.

e. Other (psychoactive) drugs

Present students with a can of cola, and invite someone to "do" a psychoactive drug. Discuss health effects of caffeine (stomach pains, restlessness, nervous, sleepy, sick), and list products that have caffeine. Explain that most of us are already addicted to it, and how better we will feel if we reduce our consumption.

Discuss health effects of several psychoactive drugs with class (cocaine, heroin, LSD, and caffeine). Complete an organizer with health effects, forms of drug, and what it does.

f. Strategies for preventing substance abuse

Read a description sheet on How to Say No (to alcohol and drugs). Working in pairs, students create dramatizations of real-world situations where drinking, smoking, and illegal drug use is occurring. These scripts must show evidence of strategies for preventing substance abuse. The pair will then present their skit to the class.

Students receive a series of case studies of teenage students who have used tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs, and are asked to help the students out of substance abuse situations.

g. Keep the Circle Strong

To prepare for Keep the Circle Strong Week, use what has been learned about substances to create TWO products for the school competition:

(1) Redesigning product labels. For a pack of cigarettes, or a bottle/can of alcohol, create a giant paper cigarette pack or bottle with a label that is designed to show the effects of that product on your health. Also create a warning message to appear on these products.

(2) One page connected series of paragraphs, typed. Explains how and why a particular substance of the student's choice should be avoided.

A paper and pencil quiz on substances, and substance abuse, assessing mostly knowledge expectations.

2. Nutrition

a. What is good nutrition?

Complete a self-inventory on nutrition and then respond to questions based on the score.

Complete an oral Food Fact or Fiction pre-test.

Complete an assignment requiring examination of the display of several nutrition posters, and the food guides and then draw conclusions.

b. Nutrition and shopping

Ask students to keep a careful record of what they eat for one whole day.

Perform a nutrition scavenger hunt in the local stores, which asks students to evaluate the nutritional value of foods they like, and do comparison shopping. Also, several questions requiring interpretation of scavenger hunt.

c. Diet audit

Analysis of what was eaten for one day. Determine nutritional values of what was eaten, and assess whether food consumed represents an appropriate split of calories from fat, protein, carbohydrates, dietary fibre, and saturated fats. Answer reflection questions, and plan an ideal diet.

4. Human Reproduction

Read a chapter from Healthwise on the male and female reproductive system, and use the information to complete a matching matrix on reproductive parts and their functions.

5. Sexuality and Decision-Making

a. Choosing sex

Discuss the case for abstinence. What does it mean? What are the advantages? What do the statistics say? How do you say "no"? Summarize this in a short note.

b. Birth control and disease prevention

Invite a nurse from the Nursing Station to discuss healthy sexuality, birth control, and disease prevention. Using sample contraceptives (condoms, pill packages, spermicides, and diaphragm etc.) discuss how each is used, advantages and disadvantages, and the risks of other methods (withdrawal, natural methods)

Provide fact sheets on condom usage, effectiveness of birth control methods, and a chapter from Healthwise on birth control. Respond to questions on birth control from that chapter, including creating an organizer on types of birth control.

c. Sexually transmitted diseases

Discuss how STDs affect adolescents, "the silent epidemic", and what can happen if you get an STD. Emphasize that abstinence is the only sure way to avoid STDs. Condoms can reduce the risk, but are not certain. Summarize this in a short note.

Provide a chapter from Healthwise on sexually transmitted diseases, and complete an organizer on the diseases (how you are infected, symptoms, and effects of disease).

Discuss the particular risks of AIDS/HIV. Show a short video on AIDS (HIV/AIDS support strengthens unity)

5. Relationships

a. Healthy relationships

Complete a self-inventory on peer relationships, and then respond to questions based on the score.

Read a chapter from Lifestyle 3 on relationships and dating. Discuss peer pressure, and how everyone develops at their own schedule. Write replies to two of the letters included in the margins using the questions given to help you.

Discuss negative peer pressure, types of manipulation, and how to resist peer pressure. Take a short note on this.
