1. Winter Hiking with Snowshoes
|
|
|
Discuss the theory of layering clothing for high-output winter activities. Ensure extremities are properly clothed. Discuss other winter health and safety concerns and how to deal with emergencies.
Complete an organizer with different snow conditions, micro-locations, and ease of snowshoeing. Discuss theory of snowshoes (distribution of weight).
Practice snowshoeing in deep snow, wind-packed snow. Practice running with snowshoes, and check pulse. Do obstacle courses.
Do several short and longer snowshoe hikes to different destinations. For each hike, students must record their observations in a daily Snowshoe Hiking Journal. Aspects of the natural and human environment will be pointed out during each hike.

2. Orienteering
|
|
a. Introduction to orienteering
|
Provide a description sheet that reviews compass directions, and the concept of degrees, bearing. Do compass exercises in gym:
(1) turn to a bearing
(2) using a bearing to find a direction
(3) hunt the penny
(4) alphabet soup
|

b. Outdoor orienteering with snowshoes
|
Follow an orienteering course (outside), but first calibrate a snowshoe pace.
|
|
|
c. Team orienteering
|
The class divides into two teams, and designs an orienteering course (outside) for the other half of the class to follow. On the second day the course is set-up and the other team follows.

3. Aerobics
|
|
|
Discuss the elements of a complete workout (same as our Gym routine, but stress that heart rate must be increased and measured to be aerobic)
Using an aerobics video, students do a workout.
Working in pairs, students create a complete aerobic and strengthening workout, using music of their own choice, to last about 30 minutes.
